We have chosen to analyse the poster for the “Shining.”
The typing in red ink of the signifier, signifies the title od the film “Shining” and this is an icon in the poster. The denotation of the style the title is written in is bold, red letters. This connotates however the meaning of danger and blood. The style of the title also signifies and denotates that this is a horror.
Photo of Jack Nicholson in a close up is also the signifier and it signifies that he is angry, violent and crazy as he stares to the side where the axe and the woman is, with his mouth half open and that suggests of him being the antagonistin the horror film. The connotation of the photo is an angry man, however we can denotate from the way he looks that he may want to kill the woman.
The signifier of the axe smashing through the door signifies violence and someon trying to break in. This is also an icon as we can instantly identify the action. Using weapons violently is a common convention of a horror. Although the denotation is just an axe being hit through the door, it denotates that someone is trying to break in to hurt someone.
Another icon in the picture is the signifier of the mid-shot of the woman with an open mouth which signifies that she is shocked of the axe. The knife in her hands signifies how she is protecting herself. The denotation of the picture is a woman with a scared face expression and it connotates that she is terrified of the other character breaking in to where she is and coming after her with an axe to kill her.

    1. A good start with the terms

Make sure that you clearly differentiate denotation and connotation in your analysis

Also, what do you notice about the way she is holding the knife?

  2. The Shining 1980 Trailer

v When the rolling credits start the font is very simple. The background is plain which misleads us and is not very scary

v Half way through the trailer the soundtrack gets intense and we start to see red fluid which is interpreted as blood, starts to pour out one of the elevator

v At this point the credits stop rolling and the furniture start to move towards the foreground as if the blood was flooding the floor

v The whole trailer has one standard shot throughout

v The camera has a very soft focus as we can see the blood flowing and rippling along the floor.

v When the credits start the soundtrack builds suspense, a synthesiser seems to be used to create an uncomfortable feeling

v As the soundtrack starts to get intense it gets louder and faster and watching as the blood splashes on the walls it gives a breathtaking relief as it ends.

    1. A response to Sam's group

      A resonable start

Try to include a little more detail in your analysis - how does the sound become more intense? what specifically makes it feel uncomfortable?

Also, try to make use of the semiotic terms, as these will deepen your analysis

I like your use of medium-specific vocabulary (condensed font, etc) and your use of semiotic terms - well done

Try to draw together your analysis and consider how audience expectations are being managed in relation to the product

    1. This is a strong analysis - everyone should note the use of wider media terms (stereotype), as well the consideration of stock characters (damsel in distress)

What are your expectations with regards to the representation of the family?
